You're the Key

Chapter 6: "You're the Key"

(Aria’s POV)

Mara’s sharp words hung in the air like a threat as we walked deeper into the glowing academy grounds.

“Careful, Kael. Some keys open doors… and some keys open graves.”

My silver light flickered nervously in my hands. I kept my fingers tightly wrapped around Kael’s, drawing strength from the warm spark that flowed between us. Max walked close on my other side, his eyes darting everywhere at the glowing paths, the ancient stone buildings covered in runes, and the other teens moving in small groups under the moonlight.

“This place is like a secret camp,” Max whispered, his voice full of wonder even after everything that had happened. “Are all these kids wolves too?”

Kael glanced down at him. “Some are. Some have different gifts. But all of them are here because the moon called them.”

Before I could ask more, we reached a large open clearing with soft grass and glowing silver stones arranged in a circle. Several older teens were already there, practicing. One girl created a perfect shield of light. Another boy shifted smoothly into a grey wolf and back again.

Lila stopped and turned to me. “This is the main training circle. We start here every night when the moon is strong.”

Mara crossed her arms a few steps away, watching me with narrowed eyes. “So the famous Key finally arrives. Tell me, glowing girl, do you even know what being the Key means? Or are you just going to accidentally burn us all down?”

I felt my cheeks burn. “I didn’t ask for any of this.”

Kael released my hand and stepped between us. “Enough, Mara. She just saved her brother and helped us escape hunters. Give her a chance.”

Mara smirked. “A chance? Her light is unstable. One wrong move and she could attract every hunter in the forest. We’ve lost friends before because of power like hers.”

The words stung. I looked down at my glowing hands. They were still leaking soft silver light even though I was trying to calm them. What if Mara was right? What if I really was dangerous?

Leo bounced on his toes, trying to lighten the mood. “Come on, Mara. She blasted a hunter tonight! That’s better than most of us did on our first night.”

A tall nineteen-year-old boy named Marcus, who seemed like the calm older mentor, spoke up. “The moon doesn’t make mistakes. If she’s the Key, there’s a reason. We train her. We protect her. That’s the rule.”

Kael nodded. “Marcus is right. Aria, sit down. We need to ground your power before it flares again.”

I sat on one of the glowing stones, Max beside me. Kael knelt in front of me. He took both my hands again. The warm spark returned immediately, stronger this time. It felt like steady sunlight flowing into my veins.

“Close your eyes,” he said softly. “Feel the moon above us. It’s not trying to fight you. It’s trying to work with you.”

I closed my eyes and tried to breathe slowly. The silver light in my hands calmed down. The wild pulsing eased into a gentle, steady glow.

“There,” Kael said, his voice warm with approval. “You’re learning fast.”

When I opened my eyes, the entire group was watching. Some looked impressed. Others, like Mara, looked worried.

Max grinned. “Aria, you look like you’re holding actual moonlight!”

I managed a small smile. “It still feels weird.”

Kael didn’t let go of my hands. “Being the Key means your power can open or seal the veil between our world and the hunters’ realm. The old legends say only one person is chosen every few generations. If the hunters drain you, they’ll become unstoppable. But if you learn to control it… you could save all of us.”

The weight of his words settled heavily on my chest.

“So no pressure, right?” I said weakly.

Lila laughed softly. “Welcome to the club. We all have heavy destinies here.”

But Mara wasn’t laughing. She stepped closer. “And what if she can’t control it? What if her light backfires during a real attack and hurts one of us? Are we really going to risk the entire academy for one new girl?”

The group went quiet.

Kael stood up slowly, still holding one of my hands. “The moon chose her. We don’t question that. We help her.”

Mara shook her head. “You’re blinded because you like her, Kael. But I’m thinking about the pack.”

Tension crackled in the air.

Before anyone could say more, a loud alarm-like chime echoed through the academy grounds. The runes on the buildings flared bright red for a moment.

Marcus’s face turned serious. “Hunters at the outer perimeter. They’re testing the barriers again… stronger than usual.”

Kael’s grip on my hand tightened. “Because of her light. It’s still calling them.”

I felt sick. “This is my fault.”

Kael pulled me to my feet. “No. This is why you need training. Tonight. Right now.”

Max looked up at me, scared but determined. “I want to help too.”

Leo ruffled Max’s hair. “Not tonight, little wolf. You stay with the younger group. We’ll keep you safe.”

As the group started moving toward the training circle, Kael leaned close to me and whispered, “You’re the Key, Aria. That means you have the power to change everything. But first, you have to survive learning how to use it.”I nodded, but doubt still twisted inside me.

As we reached the center of the glowing stones, the red alarm chimed again and more louder this time.

And in the distance, beyond the academy walls, I heard the hunters’ howls rising into the night.

They were getting closer.
