The Blood Pact

HELLBOUND: AURORA THE REAPERS LEDGER! · by Diana

Death was not a grand, quiet sleep. It was a suffocating silence where the weight of a ruined life settled like lead.

Aurora's corpse lay sprawled across the freezing floor of The Icebox. Her lips were blue, her eyes wide and unseeing, staring up at the pitch black ceiling. Her chest had collapsed, her blood pooling inside her shattered ribs. A pathetic, wasted vessel.

I stepped out from the shadows of the realm between life and damnation. Time inside the solitary cell ground to a complete halt. The slow, rhythmic dripping of water from the ceiling froze in mid air, glistening like suspended glass beads in the absolute dark.

I hovered over her body, inhaling the thick, intoxicating scent of her agony. It was exquisite. The stench of betrayal, the metallic tang of dried blood, and, beneath it all, a white hot ember of absolute hatred that had flared to life in her final, agonizing breath.

"Wake up, little bird," I whispered. My voice did not sound through the air. It vibrated inside her lingering, severed soul.

A faint, translucent form tore itself free from the corpse. Aurora's soul hung suspended above her lifeless flesh. She was pale, weeping, clutching her spectral chest as if she could still feel the crushing weight of her broken bones.

"Is... is it over?" her soul whimpered, her voice pathetic and hollow. "Am I in heaven? Please... I just want the pain to stop..."

I laughed. A low, rolling sound that shook the very foundation of the stone tomb.

"Heaven?" I purred, circling her fragile spirit like a predator sizing up a meal. "Heaven does not welcome creatures who die whimpering in the dark, full of resentment. Look at you. You gave them everything, your youth, your trust, your body, and they threw you to the wolves. They are outside right now, sleeping soundly in warm beds, drinking fine wine, planning their glowing futures over your shallow grave."

Aurora flinched as if struck. Her ghost flickered violently, images of her past flashing across her spectral form. Manson laughing as he slipped a diamond ring onto Emma's finger. Theodore and Owen raising a toast to their family's untarnished reputation. Emma wearing her clothes, driving her car, living the life that had been violently stolen from her.

"They ruined me," Aurora gasped, her phantom voice cracking with a sudden, dark fury. "They knew I was innocent. Manson lied. My brothers... my own blood... they left me here to rot."

"And rot you did," I hummed, drawing closer until my dark presence engulfed her light. "Your heart stopped three minutes ago. In six hours, Guard Miller will open that iron door, drag your cold meat out by the ankles, and dump you in a nameless furnace. Emma will shed a single, fake tear for the press. Manson will give a moving speech about your 'tragic, troubled life.' And then, they will forget you ever existed."

"No..." she spat. The pale light of her soul began to turn a deep, violent crimson. "No! It isn't fair! I want them to pay! I want them to suffer the way I suffered!"

"Ah. There it is." I smiled, exposing rows of shadow sharp teeth. "The song of true hatred. You want vengeance, little bird? You want to watch Manson crawl on his knees? You want to see Emma strip away her own skin in terror? You want your brothers to bleed in the dark?"

"Yes!" she shrieked, the sound echoing through the frozen pocket of time. "I would give anything! I'd tear the world down!"

"Then give me what I desire," I purred, holding out a single, clawed hand made of pure, creeping shadow. "A simple trade. A contract written in the ledger of Hell. You give me your body. I will occupy this pathetic vessel, reanimate its cold flesh, and walk back out into their world. I will use your skin to carve a path of absolute, agonizing ruin through Manson, Emma, Theodore, and Owen."

Aurora stared at my shadowy hand, her crimson soul trembling. "And what happens to me?"

"Your soul will remain bound to this mortal realm, an invisible witness to every drop of blood I spill. You will watch me dismantle their lives piece by piece. You will hear their screams, smell their fear, and feel the sweetness of their downfall." My eyes burned like dying stars in the dark. "And when the final target is dead, when the debt is paid in full... your soul belongs to my domain for eternity. No heaven. No peace. Only the fires of Hell."

She didn't even pause. She didn't weep for her lost paradise. The docile, gentle girl had been completely burned away in the furnace of three years of relentless torture. All that remained was a burning, hollow shell craving blood.

"Take it," Aurora snarled, pressing her spectral hand directly into my shadowy palm. "Take my body. Take my soul. Just make them bleed."

"A pleasure doing business with you, little bird."

The pact was sealed.

A surge of dark, infernal energy erupted from my core, shattering the frozen stillness of the room. I lunged forward, plunging deep into the cold, dead chest of her corpse.

Blackness. Cold meat. Broken machinery.

I forced my consciousness through her dormant nervous system. It was filthy work. Her heart was ruptured, so I wove threads of black hellfire through the muscle, forcing it to pump black, revived blood through her veins. I snapped her broken ribs back into alignment, setting the bone with raw, dark magic. Her collapsed lungs inflated with a sharp, burning gasp as I dragged oxygen back into her dead throat.

Gasp.

The eyes of the corpse snapped open. They were no longer the soft, tear filled brown eyes of a victim. They burned with a cold, predatory pitch black light before settling into a glassy, deceptive calm.

I sat up slowly, the joints in Aurora's neck popping loudly in the dark. I stretched her small, scarred hands, flexing the fingers. The pain that had destroyed her was nothing to me. It was merely a minor annoyance, a faint hum beneath my skin.

I stood up on bare, pale feet, walking smoothly across the icy concrete floor.

Far above us, the faint sound of a metallic bell chimed, announcing the dawn. The heavy steel bolt of the solitary cell began to turn. Guard Miller was coming to collect a corpse.

I stood in the center of the dark room, my arms hanging casually at my sides, a slow, unnatural smile spreading across Aurora's face. In the air beside me, her crimson soul hovered, invisible to mortal eyes, watching with bated breath.

The iron door creaked open, revealing the dim light of the hallway. Guard Miller stepped into the doorway, holding a heavy leather body bag under one arm and a flashlight in the other. He swept the beam of light across the floor, expecting to see a stiff, frozen body crumpled in the corner.

Instead, the beam hit my face.

Miller froze. His mouth fell open, his face draining of all color as he stared at the girl who should have been dead twelve hours ago.

I tilted my head, looking at him through Aurora's wide, glassy eyes. I took a single, silent step forward into the light of his flashlight.

"Good morning, Guard Miller," I said.

Her voice was soft, melodic, and perfectly docile. But beneath the surface, the air in the hallway plummeted forty degrees, frosting the glass of his watch.

"You... you..." Miller stammered, dropping the body bag, his hand scrambling wildly for the baton at his belt. "How are you breathing?!"

I smiled, my teeth white and pristine against my pale skin.

"I had a lovely rest," I whispered, stepping past him into the hallway as the parole officers arrived at the end of the corridor. "And now... I have a family to visit."
