The Shadow in the Cellar

The Banished Queen · by BeautyGid

The air inside the hidden laboratory grew heavy and freezing cold. The dark wizard’s black eyes reflected the violent red glow rising from the wooden box. Dust and small rocks fell from the cracked stone ceiling as the foundation of the castle shook under the pressure of his dark chanting.

Ravenna planted her boots firmly on the damp dirt floor. She could feel the curse pulsing like a frantic heart, trying to spread through the foundation and poison every soul sleeping above. The five pins stuck in the wooden doll represented Draven’s daughters, and the rusted nail through its chest held the royal bloodline hostage. If she failed to stop this spell right now, the entire castle would become a mass grave.

"You are too late, witch!" the man spat, his voice sounding like dry leaves scraping over stone. "Lord Malakor left a guardian behind to ensure his work would never be undone. You think you can save a mortal king? You think magic belongs to a woman who hides behind the face of a peasant?"

"I hide from no one," Ravenna said, her voice dropping into a dangerous rumble.

She let go of the gentle disguise entirely. The chestnut hair instantly bled away into wild, dark shadows that whipped around her shoulders like a storm. Her innocent hazel eyes turned into brilliant, glowing purple flames. She raised both hands, her fingers curling as she pulled raw, ancient magic straight from the earth beneath her feet. The cold stone room filled with the sweet, heavy scent of crushed pine and ozone.

The dark wizard lunged forward, throwing his arms wide. A thick wave of black mist shot from his hands, shaping itself into long, venomous snakes that hissed loudly as they slithered through the air toward her throat.

Ravenna did not flinch. She snapped her wrists together, creating a blinding shield of purple light in front of her body. The black snakes crashed into the barrier and burst into harmless sparks. Without giving him a second to breathe, she thrust her right hand forward. A sharp spear of pure, condensed magic shot from her palm, striking the wizard straight in his broad chest.

The impact slammed him against the rough stone wall. The ancient mortar cracked behind his back, and he let out a guttural gasp of pain. But his black eyes flared with unnatural life. He was not entirely human anymore; the dark blood magic of Lord Malakor had twisted his body into something hollow and undead.

He laughed, a bloody, raspy sound, and reached toward the stone pedestal with a trembling hand. "You cannot destroy the anchor without burning your own soul, witch! The moment the nail is pulled, the curse releases its poison!"

"Then I will burn it," Ravenna declared.

She ignored the wizard and turned her full attention back to the wooden box. The red runes painted in dried blood were burning so bright they scorched the old wood. The rusted nail in the center of the doll vibrated violently, threatening to burst and release its deadly poison into the stone castle above.

Ravenna stepped toward the pedestal. The dark magic pushed back against her like a physical wall of iron, trying to crush her ribs and force her to her knees. She felt the heavy weight of the curse clawing at her mind, whispering terrible promises of grief and failure. It showed her visions of Draven bleeding on a battlefield, of his five daughters crying in the dark, and of her own mother dying alone in the cold woods.

"Your words mean nothing to me," she growled, fighting through the agonizing pressure.

She reached out her bare hand and wrapped her fingers around the freezing, rusted nail.

A wave of pure agony shot up her arm. Ravenna gasped, her vision going white as the dark spell fought back, burning her flesh with dark fire. The mark of the blood oath on her right palm flared with intense heat, remembering the pledge she had made to the mortal king. She thought of Draven’s rough, calloused hand holding hers in the quiet archives. She thought of his fierce promise to stand against the whole world just to keep her safe. She was no longer just fighting for revenge or her lonely throne. She was fighting for the man who had stolen her heart.

With a fierce, feral war cry that shook the dark room, Ravenna yanked the rusted nail out of the wooden doll.

A deafening screech echoed off the stone walls as the dark spell shattered. A massive shockwave of purple and black energy exploded from the pedestal, blowing the heavy wooden table into splinters and knocking the dark wizard off his feet. The red runes on the box turned to gray ash and blew away in the sudden wind. The five small pins dissolved, releasing Draven’s daughters from the shadow of the curse.

The dark wizard screamed as the backlash of his own broken spell consumed him. The black magic keeping his hollow body alive turned against him, turning his skin into dust before he even hit the dirt floor. Within seconds, nothing was left of Malakor's guardian except a dark stain on the stone.

Ravenna fell to her knees beside the pedestal, her chest heaving as she fought to catch her breath. The severe burn on her hand slowly faded as her wild magic healed her skin, leaving only a faint, glowing purple mark behind. The heavy, rotting air in the hidden cellar vanished, replaced by a clean, fresh breeze that smelled of damp earth and spring rain.

The curse was finally broken. The bloodline of Valerius was free.

Ravenna stood up slowly, her knees trembling slightly from the sheer drain on her power. She pulled her magical disguise back over her body, watching her wild dark hair shift back into chestnut and her burning eyes return to a calm, gentle hazel. She smoothed down her simple green dress and stepped over the debris scattered across the floor.

She walked out of the hidden laboratory and pushed open the secret stone door, stepping back into the damp corridor of the royal dungeons.

The two guards at the bottom of the stairs looked up in confusion, having felt the small tremors in the ground.

"Is everything alright down here, Lady Elara?" the first guard asked, clutching his spear tightly.

"Everything is perfectly clear," Ravenna answered softly, giving him a small, polite smile. "The air is fresh now."

She walked past them and climbed the steep stone stairs, leaving the dark dungeon behind. Her heart pounded with a mixture of immense relief and intense longing. She needed to see Draven. She needed to tell him that his burden was lifted, that his throne was secure, and that his legacy could finally take root.

As she stepped out into the bright, warm sunlight of the castle courtyard, she saw Draven standing near the main hall, surrounded by his stern lords and his three queens. He looked exhausted, his broad shoulders carrying the weight of the entire kingdom.

Then, he turned his head and caught her eye across the crowded yard.

Draven stopped talking to his lords mid-sentence. His stormy gray eyes locked onto hers, searching her face for any sign of danger. Ravenna offered him a faint, secret nod.

The King of Valerius let out a breath he seemed to have been holding for years. A subtle, powerful shift crossed his handsome face, his jaw relaxing as he realized the nightmare was over. The crown was safe, but as he looked at the beautiful witch in her humble green dress, they both knew the real war for their love was only just beginning.
